The Ins and Outs of College SearchingBeing a junior in high school, I know college is on everyone's mind, including my own. Searching for the perfect college takes endless hours on the computer researching every college you could attend, in or out-of-state. There are so many things that could make or break a college for someone. The tuition could be too expensive, there could be too many people at the campus, or it could even be something little like they do not have a sports team you want to watch. Throughout my whole searching career, I have come up with a few tricks up my sleeve. The first thing you have to choose when you start looking is location. If you want to go in-state, out of state, or even out of the country, that is something you have to think of quickly. If you want to go in the state you live, there are fewer colleges to look at, you get in-state tuition, and you are closer to home. But, if you want to go out of state, you can have a little more freedom, and a lot more choices when it comes to finding the perfect college. The next thing you want to decide is the size of the school you want to attend. You need to know if you would be okay going to a big school with over 40,000 students like Michigan State University, or somewhere small with under 2,000 students like Albion College. You also need to decide if you would want to go to a Big Ten School, an Ivy League school, or anything else along those lines. The final thing wants to know before you go searching is what kind of major you are looking into. If a school is known for its doctor program and you know you do not want to be a doctor, you should probably keep searching. You do not always have to know what you want to major in when you go to the school, but you should, at least, have a general idea of what you like when you go in. The worst thing that could happen is you go to a school and they end up not having anything you want to study there! From all of the searching I have done, I have learned that those are the three biggest things you want to know before you start looking. You also want to have a general idea of if you want to play a sport or do a music, but that comes later in the process. You also want to find a good website that you trust that helps you look for the perfect college for you.
